Faith Collectives

The title of this blog comes from C.S. Lewis' quote on working through theology with a pencil and pipe. I've found, that while certain revelations come in the study of Scripture, much of it happens while in community.

The Canton Faith Collective of Radial Church

Faith collectives have been the key to Radial's spiritual growth as our church family works on what it means to live as a body of believers. I just wanted to give a shout out to the people who have encouraged me and continue to help me dig through the Word, whether or not I have a pencil and pipe in hand at the time. :)

5 Ways to Encourage Someone This Week

I took a spiritual gifts assessment a few years back which basically told me that encouragement was my least prominent gift of any listed throughout Scripture.  This is all to say that it is more likely you'll see me bust out speaking in tongues rather than see me give an encouraging word to someone.
The act of encouraging others is something I struggle with often as I feel incredibly uncomfortable saying something helpful to my peers.  Sure, I can lend an ear, but if advice is wanted in return, I typically say, "you know who would be able to help you is...." or "hmm."
Not my proudest moments, but something I have just chalked up to, "well, it's not my gift."
And while it is not a gifting of mine, it is still not excused.  I can't be mean to others just because I am not blessed with being naturally outspoken in this area.  I have to instead work at utilizing this important part of life.
Everyone appreciates encouragement.  I got a note in the mail from a customer the other day that just said "thanks for putting up with me."  And while I was definitely annoyed during the time I worked with him and continually changed his design, I appreciated the note that recognized my effort.  Last night I met with a friend who was saying how much it meant that a friend of hers who lives about a half hour away brought her dinner after hearing her grandma passed away. These small acts of kindness, if you will, mean so much to the ones you bless with them.
These acts not only encourage others, but show the love of Christ living through you.  I cannot begin to tell you how often I feel awful for treating people the way I do, then saying I am a Christian.  We should build one another up in love.  And even if it is difficult to do, I think it is incredibly important.
With that said, here are 5 simple ways to be encouraging each day of this week:
Monday: TEXT a hello, thinking of you, hope you're well.  These words are small but powerful reminders that you are thinking of someone in the mundane tasks that Mondays bring.
Tuesday: CALL someone. ok, I know this is taking it a step further in uncomfortable-zone, but in today's society where no one really picks up the phone, it's nice to even leave a voice mail to say hello.  Who knows? Maybe your voice is exactly what they needed to hear that day.
Wednesday: CANDY!  Stop by your friend's work and drop off their favorite candy bar.  My husband has done this for me before and I can't tell you how it has brightened even my worst days.  Even if they are a self-proclaimed health-nut, I bet they can't resist the temptation of a free, happy chocolate bar!
Thursday: WRITE a note.  We have so many avenues for writing (facebook, twitter, emails, etc.) but wouldn't it be awesome to receive a hand-written note in the mail from a friend?  Someone from our church has left me a note on our porch and it meant SO much that she took the time to literally pen out her thoughts and prayers for me.
Friday: HANG out with someone. Grab coffee, a beer, or whatever it is that you can chat over.  Food brings us closer together as a community, so munch on some cookies and see what that person has been up to.  Nothing has to come of it other than just lending an ear and showing you care.
Good luck as you attempt to be more encouraging to one another throughout the next week - I know it will be as much of a struggle for me, but it will mean so much to the one you are blessing :)

Women's Spirituality

This quarter, I'm taking a class on the History of Women's Spirituality.  So far, reading the martyr stories of such brave women has been an incredible inspiration to me!  One of the readings, a letter from a mother - Dhuoda - to her son had an amazing quote that I just had to share.  Enjoy!

Gone West

I had the privilege of being out West the past 2 weeks in the beautiful state of California.  The Katy Perry song "California Gurls" continually looped in my head as I pictured myself living along the coast. I mean, they're undeniable, right?

We began in San Francisco, stayed in Walnut Creek (with family), caught a Giants game (beautiful stadium!), explored the city on bicycles (rented from Mission Bicycle Company), got annoyed at traffic (of course), got lost in Chinatown, checked out Pier 39, rode to the top of Twin Peaks, and even drove to Napa - all within the first few days!

From there we traveled to Manteca where we stayed with friends who were gracious enough to let us crash there for a few days. We got to check out their church, hear about a new church plant, and even assist with questions. We ate (and drank) at a sweet brewery, got everyone to download the "Untappd" app, and checked out an Oakland A's game (nothing compared to the Giants stadium), then drove on down to Santa Cruz.  This was the best way to end our trip. Drinking coffee by the ocean and chatting with a new friend made me feel right at home. I could definitely live here. I could be a California Girl... too bad it's so freakin' expensive!

From there we took our time making our way back to the city by driving up Highway 1 along the coast.
PERFECTION!
I am a sucker for good road trips and this was by far the best one I've ever had.  We took our time and pulled off the road, checking out a plethora of sea lions and dolphins playing in the water. So cool! We found a cool lighthouse, neat picture-perfect views, and enjoyed one another's company as we drove up the coast.  I felt like I was in a movie!

Like I said, the last day was the best day. We spent an entire day (losing time going back East) traveling home just to get immersed in work and the craziness of life right away.  So worth it.

I've heard that you can tell what you really value by what you spend most of your time and money on. I'm guessing it must be evident that I live for these travel experiences! Can't wait for our next adventure.

The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore. - Psalm 121:8

Worship at the Falls

Setting Up for our Video Shoot!
A couple weeks ago, we (the Radial Church worship band) headed up to Huntsville, Ontario to help lead worship at a weekend retreat.

On our way, we made a pit stop at Niagara Falls and recorded some tunes:

All My Fountains at Niagara Falls

Enjoy the beauty that surrounds you (whether or not you're at a giant waterfall!).

Finishing a Book = Detachment Problems

The book I recently finished (last week anyway) is Toni Morrison's "Song of Solomon" and it is one of those books which takes you captive in the strength of powerful words.  I absolutely love Toni Morrison's writing style and subject matter - African American Lit is one of my favorites.  I always go straight to that section in bookstores.

Have you ever finished a book that you were so consumed with that you don't know how to detach yourself from its storyline when it's over?

I tend to lose myself in things I consume fairly easily (books, food, movies, etc.) and therefore I read the last page and just stared off into space.  This is actually a regular occurrence for me as I attempt to re-enter the physical world, but it always takes a moment.  This book was so consuming that the things I did the following days were always done with the thought that the characters in the book were real - that they would somehow show up and we could talk it out.

I suppose that's what makes an amazing writer. Great words choices.  Powerfully constructed sentences.  Believable characters.

I am truly inspired as I attempt to come up with storylines for my own novels.  The more I read the more I want to write.  It's an amazing concept.
Up next on the reading circuit? Well, I finished C.S. Lewis's "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" yesterday (which wasn't quite as difficult to detach myself from the characters for some reason), so I am moving onto a new one: "Bury Me Standing" by Isabel Fonseca.  I can't wait to become a gypsy - err, I mean read about the gypsies.  But who knows?! Don't be surprised if you find me wandering the streets in full out gypsy garb.
